Editing services

One boon of working with editors and agents and publishing houses is that I have developed a great sense of how to edit for publication. Combined with my background as an English teacher and longtime writing group participant, I’ve developed a knack for critiquing manuscripts. You’ll also find my prices competitive and reasonable.

Manuscript In-Line Comments and Editorial Letter:

This includes an analysis of your writing, a content critique that outlines overall strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript, and a full editorial letter. I will look at plot, characterization, pacing, and stylistic choices. Rate: $.040 per word (50k words = $2,000)

Query Letter and First 25 pages

The two most important documents as you start to query agents are the query letter and the story’s beginning. This is what they’ll read to decide if they want to take you on as a client. I’ll give line edits, general feedback, and read your opening to make sure it’s as polished as possible. After you make adjustments, I will give a second round of feedback on the query. Cost: $500

Note: Response time depends on the length of your manuscript, as well as the quality. I will give expected delivery times and dates based on my schedule, but these times will generally be very quick. I’d expect Full Manuscript Edits to take just over two weeks (this is subject to change).

I’m only taking on a handful of edits each month to supplement my own writing time and work. Please contact me at scottreintgen@gmail.com if you’re interested in a trial. I will read the first ten pages of your manuscript, provide responses, and we can both decide if an arrangement is appropriate at this stage in your manuscript’s life.
