Writing and Works

I am represented by Kristin Nelson of Nelson Literary Agency. My first series, The Nyxia Triad, is published by Crown BFYR, a subsidiary of Random House Children’s Books. Next up is Saving Fable, a middle grade action and adventure book. And then Ashlords, the first book in my next young adult series, releases in 2020.

SAVING FABLE (9/17/19)

Side characters can be heroes too in this charming and fast-paced adventure that is The Land of Stories meets The Phantom Tollbooth!

Indira has been a character-in-waiting her entire life. So she can’t believe her luck when she’s finally chosen to travel to Fable and study at the renowned Protagonist Preparatory, a school known for producing the best heroes. But Indira’s dreams of achieving hero status don’t exactly go as planned. A failed audition lands her in the school’s side-character track, and her best efforts to prove advisors–famous characters like Alice from Wonderland and Professor Darcy–wrong are constantly sabotaged. Indira is starting to feel like an evil antagonist might be to blame. As the danger spreads, Indira discovers all of Fable is under siege. With her friends Maxi and Phoenix by her side, she pieces together clues that will reveal who is behind the dark magic threatening them all. But the more Indira uncovers, the more doubt she feels about her place in this world of stories. After all, can a side character really save the day?

Ashlords (1/21/20)

Red Rising meets The Scorpio Races in this epic fantasy following three phoenix horse riders–skilled at alchemy–who must compete at The Races–the modern spectacle that has replaced warfare within their empire.

Every year since the Ashlords were gifted phoenix horses by their gods, they’ve raced them. First into battle, then on great hunts, and finally for the pure sport of seeing who rode the fastest. Centuries of blood and fire carved their competition into a more modern spectacle: The Races.

Over the course of a multi-day event, elite riders from clashing cultures vie to be crowned champion. But the modern version of the sport requires more than good riding. Competitors must be skilled at creating and controlling phoenix horses made of ash and alchemy, which are summoned back to life each sunrise with uniquely crafted powers to cover impossible distances and challenges before bursting into flames at sunset. But good alchemy only matters if a rider knows how to defend their phoenix horse at night. Murder is outlawed, but breaking bones and poisoning ashes? That’s all legal and encouraged.

In this year’s Races, eleven riders will compete, but three of them have more to lose than the rest–a champion’s daughter, a scholarship entrant, and a revolutionary’s son. Who will attain their own dream of glory? Or will they all flame out in defeat?

There, Babel will use them to mine a substance that’s quietly become the most valuable in the world. Emmett’s year-long flight will act as a competition. Every training session is measured, every point matters, and Emmett will do anything to win. But Babel’s ship is full of secrets. Secrets about the volatile substance they’re hoping to mine, about the reclusive humanoids already living on Eden, and about their true intentions for the kids that don’t win their competition. 2. I just finished reading Nyxia. Loved it! Looked immediately online for the next book, and was so sad to not find it. I am anxiously awaiting book two.

  3. Is it terrible that, while I loved Nyxia (just finished it, be sure to click on the review site to see for yourself when the review gets posted), I do have one question:

Why a triad? Don’t get me wrong, the book clearly left off with a cliff hanger. But, I could definitely see this book as a stand alone. Or, at least, being able to stand by itself. That is one of the few things I didn’t like, actually. Once I got through the book halfway and saw that we were still on the ship and probably not going to leave the ship until the very end, I was pretty happy to find out how they got there. How they changed.

    • Hey! Totally understandable question! I think I’ve always seen it as a multiple part series. I did take some satisfaction in feeling like the story ends with a defined “ending.” Emmett’s story aboard the ship concludes. And we move onto the next story: life on a new planet. So I think having it be a trilogy, or a triad, makes sense. The honest answer, too, is that my publisher was willing to buy three books! So if they’re going to pay me, I might as well try and write three books. Now that I’ve finished the first draft of book three, I’m very glad we chose to go in this direction. These characters were worthy of three books!
